Byredo is the product of artistic director, Swedish born Ben Gorman and perfumers Olivia Giacobetti and Jerome Epinette. The house’s approach is understated. Simple compositions using the highest quality of raw materials inspired by travel and influences from Ben’s ethnic background. The launch of Byredo’s Fantastic Man was modern perfume marketing at its niche best. Byredo Parfums collaborated with Dutch designer Jop Van Bennekom and journalist Gert Jonkers to create an eau de cologne in the name of Van Bennekom and Jonker’s men’s lifestyle magazine, Fantastic Man. The fragrance was launched exclusively at Colette, rue St Honore, Paris in 2009.
Fantastic Man is a beautifully constructed, modern approach to men’s perfumery. A hybrid cologne/fougere, the fragrance substitutes standard men’s perfume ingredients for similar but less commonly used materials. The philosophy remains the same but the scent is refreshing and new. A bitter citrus accord replaces the commonly used neroli/bergamot note. Cardamom and star anise are a modern take on men’s spice. Instead of heavy animalic notes Byredo use a lightweight incense/patchouli mix; an accord that has become a bit of a stamp on most of the brand’s creations. Moss and lavender ensure the fragrance doesn’t stray too far left. Geranium and vetiver round off this modern and sophisticated men’s cologne.
Despite the name Fantastic Man is a humble fragrance. Understated yet elegant, Fantastic Man’s wearer is cultured and fashionable without too much effort. A.P.C and Acne by day, Martin Margiela and Helmut Lang by night. Whilst stylish it remains a straightforward scent, something most men will appreciate. Great for the younger man that has recently traded his pair of converse sneakers in favour of Lanvin’s.
